I am teaching myself how to (Irish) fiddle and I believe Im doing a good job except that sometimes I get this horrible screeching, scratching, and sliding, no matter how straight my bowing is! When I pluck the strings they sound fine so its not my fingering either. I think it may be my rosin. It came with my outfit and though I don’t know much about rosin it appears to be as cheap as it gets! It comes off so easily and if I play for more than thirty minutes or so I have to stop and reapply because my bow starts sliding and producing a screeching noise! Also it leaves a coating on my strings, though Im pretty sure I don’t put on too much. I want to try a higher quality rosin but Im not sure what kind. I have a horse hair bow and once summer comes around it will be very very humid (humidity adds an average of 10 to 20 degrees to the heat index around my area). Im thinking of trying Hill or Jade but I may try another based on recommendations. I would prefer a commonly carried brand so I don’t have to order it.Thanks!Oh! Could it also be my bow? That can have a serious effect on your sound, not to mention all sorts of other bad news for your violin’s varnish.Is your bow old? Cheap? If it’s used and old and the hair is thin or dirty you may need a re-hair. If it’s a cheap bow from a disreputable source it may have synthetic hair. The fact the outfit came with funky rosin (whether cheap or just really old and dry) makes me think the bow itself might also have problems.Anyway, my advice is to take the following actions: Wipe excess rosin off your strings and body of the instrument, try new rosin, and if that doesn’t solve your problems, get your bow re-haired or get a new bow entirely.

This expensive item is made from the silkworm when it spins a cocoon. The Chinese discovered this at around 2600 B.C.E. and kept this secret of producing silk a very well kept one. Once the Silk Road was open techniques of weaving the silken thread did not begin to spread because this material was similar to that used by cloth weavers. But by 300 A.D. silk cloth was being woven in central and western Asia using Chinese thread. The well kept Chinese secret was not kept for long because at the start of the fifth century people in the Khotan (an oasis) on the southern path of the silk rode around the Takla Makan Desert learned the secret of the production and making of silk itself. The story of how this happens goes like this. One of the Khotan kings married a Chinese princess who smuggled out silk worms and mulberry seeds (the silk worm only eats from mulberry trees) out of china in her headdress.
